Greek War of Independence

Elafonisi beach isn’t just a natural wonder; it’s a place of historical significance. At the highest point on the island, a plaque commemorates a tragic event from the Greek War of Independence.

On Easter Sunday, 18 April 1824, hundreds of Greeks, mostly women and children, were killed by Ottoman soldiers. This event is a poignant reminder of the island’s historical importance and the sacrifices made during the struggle for independence.

Shipwreck of the Imperatrix

Another historical marker at Elafonisi is a large wooden cross commemorating the shipwreck of the Imperatrix, an Österreichischer Lloyd passenger steamer that sank on 22 February 1907. Due to strong northwest winds, 38 people died in a lifeboat that tried to reach the shore.

The Imperatrix still lies on the seabed in front of the island’s cliffs and was the reason that a lighthouse was built on an island hilltop. The lighthouse was destroyed during World War II by occupying German troops, adding another layer of history to the island.
