The museum’s archaeologists were divided—one, Nikolaos Platon, believed it was authentic, while another, Spyridon Marinatos, dismissed it as a forgery. Due to this dispute, the ring was returned to the priest, who soon claimed that it had been lost.
For decades, the ring vanished, existing only in archaeological sketches and museum replicas. Scholars debated its existence, writing studies based on the known copies, but the original was nowhere to be found.
Then, in a Hollywood-like twist, the ring resurfaced in 2001 when Georgios Kazantzis, a retired police officer, inherited a house once owned by Polakis. During renovations, he discovered a small jar hidden inside a fireplace, containing the legendary Ring of Minos. The ring was intact, bearing even the small scratch made by Papadakis’ father decades earlier, marking it as the original artifact.
Kazantzis delivered the ring to the Greek authorities, who confirmed its authenticity in 2002. It was then officially placed in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, where it remains one of the most treasured artifacts of Minoan Crete.
