Knossos Palace Sets New Visitor Record in 2024

Knossos Palace Breaks Visitor Records in 2024
The Palace of Knossos shattered all visitation records in 2024, surpassing the one-million-visitor milestone. This achievement is attributed in part to the surge in cruise ship passengers during a record-breaking year for the Port of Heraklion.

In 2024, the archaeological site of Knossos welcomed a total of 1,026,113 visitors. August was the most popular month, attracting 181,687 visitors, followed by July with 165,168, September with 147,039, and October with 124,316.

The majority of visitors were German tourists of Crete. However, a decline in visitor numbers was noted in June, likely due to the European Football Championship held in Germany.

Regarding efforts to include the site on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, the Municipality of Heraklion is awaiting approval of the study on the façades of nearby tourist shops. This approval is essential to implement necessary interventions by March 2025, as UNESCO’s final evaluation is scheduled for the summer of 2025.

We have also observed that most visitors seek to enrich their experience by learning all the historical details about Knossos. To cater to this interest, we offer the Knossos Audio Guide at a small fee, providing fascinating insights into the rich history and mysteries of the palace.
